This section lists material which appears not to have been formally published, and also personal material such as copies of obituaries. It includes unpublished books and articles, texts of lectures to the Society, author's drafts of material subsequently published, private notes, personal problem collections and scrapbooks, and so on. Manuscripts copied wholesale from published books and periodicals are generally listed under the book or periodical from which they were taken, but selective or reorganized extracts (for example, cuttings of articles dealing with a particular topic) appear here.

"Black Books" are small black notebooks 16cm x 10cm, usually of 100 pages. Most carry a date, but these dates are not necessarily definitive since material may have been added after the initial compilation. In assigning dates in this catalogue, a view has been taken as to whether any particular collection appears to have been written all at one time, but the evidence is not always clear and other views may well be reasonable.

A very small amount of the unpublished material in the Library, although accepted in good faith, has proved to be of such a nature that its dissemination may be expected to distress members still alive or the families and friends of members recently deceased. This material has accordingly been withdrawn from use, and no reference to it appears in this catalogue. If any reader considers that any other unpublished material in the Library should be similarly withdrawn, he is asked to inform the Librarian immediately.

They are stored in a box file labelled "Lommer papers (Ted Isles Bequest)" and comprise an indexed file of material mounted for convenient study, a photograph album, and an envelope of miscellaneous and duplicate material. A summary follows. Everything is in the main file unless otherwise stated.

---- Cuttings relating to Lommer's studies. These have been arranged in order of increasing White material, and cross-references to "1234 modern end-game studies" (Sutherland and Lommer, 1938) and "1357 end-game studies" (Lommer, 1975) have been added. Particularly noteworthy is a cutting which shows the celebrated study with 2R v Q (wKf5, Ra1/c1, bKf3, Qh4, win by 1 Ra3+ Ke2 2 Rb3+ Kd1 3 Rh2! Qd4 4 Ra1+) to have been published originally in the Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham Journal and Chatham Standard, 20 March 1946, and not in "National-Zeitung 1947" as stated by Lommer himself in "1357 end-game studies".

---- A cutting from "L'Echo des Echecs", xi.1935, containing a contribution to a discussion "Sur l'utilite du probleme" from a reader signing himself "Un joueur-compositeur".

---- A cutting of the article "The end-game today" by Lommer and Sutherland from "Chess Pie III".

---- Cuttings relating to simultaneous displays and other tournaments, including five games by Lommer.

---- Studies by H. Rinck and V. Vukovic in the composers' manuscript.
