BCPS Library Catalogue, 18 Jun 07: Introduction Page 1 This catalogue lists the British Chess Problem Society's Library as at 18 June 2007. It is divided into sections as follows: - published books and pamphlets; - periodicals; - tourney awards; - manuscripts and other unpublished material; - problem collections on cards; - photographs and similar items; - miscellanea. Everything available in the library is listed, though a small amount of the material has yet to be examined in detail. However, the catalogue is continually being reviewed and revised, and notification of any error or omission (in particular, of a misinterpretation of something in a foreign language, or of a failure to record an issue missing from the run of a periodical) will be appreciated. The catalogue has been designed to be readily transportable between computers, and to be searched on a computer which offers nothing more sophisticated than an elementary editing program. The text has therefore been confined to the characters ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz 0123456789 !"#$%&'()*+,-./:;<=>?@[\]^`{|}~ and whatever characters are used to represent "space" and "new line". Accents and other diacritical marks have been suppressed, and names and titles in non-Latin alphabets have been transliterated. However, the present librarian does not read any Cyrillic or other non-Latin language, and experience has shown that the transliteration procedure is susceptible to inconsistency. Readers searching for items in non-Latin languages should therefore allow for alternative spellings. The catalogue can be downloaded from the Internet without charge. It is also available in disc or printed form, and any member wishing to receive it in one of these forms should contact the Librarian (a charge is normally made). All copies are supplied in paginated form ready for printing (80 characters per line, 66 lines per page). The Library owes a great deal to donations and bequests by members and their families. This catalogue identifies such material as far as is practicable, but there are inevitable omissions because information has not been preserved. Any reader able to to shed further light is warmly invited to do so. The Library is the private property of the Society, and those who are not members may visit it only by invitation; but an invitation will usually be extended even to persons having no previous connection with the Society if the visitor agrees to observe the rules of the Library and the sole or primary object of the visit is to consult material which was published in Great Britain or Northern Ireland and is not in the British Library. Visitors are asked to give not less than 48 hours notice (not counting Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays) and to indicate any items which they would particularly like to see, so that material normally stored elsewhere can be made available. John Beasley, Honorary Librarian. 7 St James Road, Harpenden, Herts AL5 4NX, England; johnbeasley@mail.com; Harpenden (01582) 715858. BCPS Library Catalogue, 18 Jun 07: Published books and pamphlets Page 2 Section 1: Published books and pamphlets In general, an item is listed in this section if it appears to have been formally published in its present form or to be a transcription of published material. Draft and other apparently unpublished material is catalogued under "manuscripts". However, the print runs of problem material are sometimes very short, and the distinction between "copied for publication" and "copied only for private circulation" is not always clear. The listing of an item within this section does not constitute evidence that an author, printer, distributor, or other person is a "publisher" within the meaning either of English law or of the law of any other country. Except where otherwise stated, material listed in this section is held in the bookcases at the entrance to the library. Items are listed in the order in which they are stored on the shelves, with cross-references as appropriate (for example, under the names of second and later authors). Oversize items are held on the bottom shelves of two bookcases; otherwise, with the few exceptions noted below, storage is in alphabetical order, the first author's name being taken as the key if it appears on the cover of the book and the title if no author's name appears. Names and titles in non-Roman alphabets are collated as if transliterated. Note, however, that only the information on the OUTSIDE of the book is taken into consideration in deciding where it is stored. If no author's name appears on the outside, it is neither necessary nor useful to look for one inside in order to put the book back in the right place; quite the reverse, in fact. The main exceptions to these general rules are as follows: - Korschelt's paper "Der gereinigite Alexander", which is a set of corrections to Alexandre's "Collection" of 1846, is stored therewith, and the two are regarded as a single volume for loan purposes; - a book entitled "Fairy chess / C. M. Fox series" is actually a bound set of T. R. Dawson's "C. M. Fox" booklets, together with N. M. Gibbins's booklet "Fairy chess problems", and is stored under "Dawson" next to the individual booklets; - Sutherland and Lommer's "1234 modern end-game studies" is stored under "Lommer" so that it is adjacent to Lommer's "1357 end-game studies". - Material in Chinese and Japanese is stored after "Z". The attribution of edited selections and collections sometimes presents a difficulty. Is such a book a collection of X's work edited by Y, or a book by Y about X? Examination suggests that neither answer is universally appropriate, and a view has been taken on the apparent merits of each individual case; but where such a book is stored and listed under the name of the editor, there is always a cross-reference under the name of the composer. Between 1967 and 1992, each book in the library was identified by a code number (for example, "A1") and books were stored in code number order. In 1992, the archive, whose contents had not been given equivalent numbers, was merged with the library, and the assignment of these numbers was discontinued. Where an existing number is clearly visible on the outside of the book, it is noted here for ease of checking, but new accessions are not being given code numbers, and some of the existing numbers are embossed into "Dymo" tape and may fall off in the course of time.
